Overview

Smart Categories for Magento 2 by Meetanshi turns static category pages into rule-based, self-updating collections. Instead of assigning products to a category by hand, you define conditions once, for example price under 50, brand equals Nike, colour is red, or stock status is in stock, and the extension keeps that category populated with every product that matches.

Manual catalog curation does not scale. A "New Arrivals" category goes stale within weeks, a "Sale" category keeps listing items whose discount has ended, and out-of-stock products sit at the top of a landing page long after they stopped being buyable. Each of those is a merchandiser opening the category edit form and moving products around. Smart Categories removes that work. Rules are evaluated when a product is saved or imported, and a scheduled cron re-evaluates all active rules every 4 hours so date-based and bulk changes are picked up without anyone touching the admin.

You keep full control where you need it. Manual pinning lets you force specific products to the top of a smart category regardless of whether they match the rule, and exclusions let you keep specific products out. An Ajax preview shows the matching product set before you save, so you can check a rule does what you expect. Rules are scoped per store view, which matters if you run different languages, currencies, or inventories. Product assignments are written to dedicated index tables rather than resolved through live EAV queries, so category pages stay fast as the catalog grows. The extension works with Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce 2.3.x and 2.4.x, on both Luma and Hyvä storefronts.

Features of Smart Categories for Magento 2

  • Rule-based product assignment: Build dynamic categories from product attribute conditions instead of assigning products manually.
  • Standard Magento condition builder: Rules are created with the native condition builder inside the default category edit form, so there is no separate interface to learn.
  • Wide condition support: Build rules on attributes such as brand, price, colour, stock level, new status, and date-based conditions.
  • Manual pinning: Force-include selected products at the top of a smart category, regardless of whether they match the rule.
  • Product exclusions: Force-exclude specific products from a smart category even when they match the conditions.
  • Real-time Ajax preview: See the products a rule will match before you save it.
  • Automatic updates on product save: Observers detect product saves and imports, then update the affected categories.
  • Scheduled re-evaluation: A cron job re-runs all active rules every 4 hours to catch bulk updates and date-based conditions.
  • Dedicated index tables: Product assignments are stored in purpose-built index tables to avoid heavy EAV queries on category pages.
  • CLI reindexing: Trigger a reindex on demand from the console.
  • Change history logs: Every addition, removal, and update trigger is logged for auditing and troubleshooting.
  • Multi-store view scoping: Define different rules per store view for separate languages and inventories.
  • Theme compatibility: Works with custom Luma and Hyvä storefronts through standard layout XML.

Use Cases of Smart Categories for Magento 2

  • New Arrivals that populates itself from products created in the last 30 days and drops them automatically as they age out.
  • Sale or Clearance pages built from special price or discount percentage, so items leave the page when the promotion ends.
  • In Stock Now categories that exclude out-of-stock products, keeping shoppers away from items they cannot buy.
  • Brand landing pages that stay current as new SKUs from that brand are imported.
  • Price band navigation such as "Under $25" or "Premium over $200" without manual sorting.
  • Seasonal collections scheduled by date, for example a Summer edit that assembles itself when the season starts.
  • Colour, size, or material collections for fashion and home catalogs where the attribute set drives merchandising.
  • Large catalogs where products arrive by regular supplier import and manual category assignment is not practical.

Benefits of Smart Categories for Magento 2

  • Less manual merchandising: Set a rule once instead of maintaining category assignments product by product.
  • Categories that stay current: New and updated products flow into the right categories on save, import, or the 4-hour cron run.
  • Fewer dead ends for shoppers: Rules can keep out-of-stock and expired-promotion products off landing pages.
  • Better discoverability: Attribute-driven collections surface relevant products that would otherwise sit deep in the catalog.
  • Control where it matters: Pinning and exclusions let merchandisers override the rule for hero products or items they want hidden.
  • Confidence before publishing: The Ajax preview shows the resulting product set before the rule goes live.
  • Performance-conscious: Indexed assignments keep category page load times steady as the catalog grows.
  • Auditability: Change logs show what was added or removed and what triggered it.
