WebP Images

Mage2Expert WebP Images is an extension for Magento that adds full WebP support to a store without requiring a single image to be re-uploaded. It widens Magento's built-in JPG/PNG/GIF upload restrictions so .webp files can be uploaded directly for products, categories, CMS pages and static blocks, Page Builder content, the store logo and favicon, and product CSV/Excel import — and it automatically converts every already-existing JPG/PNG/GIF image to a cached WebP copy the first time it is rendered on the storefront, serving it through a standard <picture> element with the original image kept as an automatic fallback for browsers that don't support WebP. After activating the extension, merchants see smaller, faster-loading images across product listings, product pages, category pages, CMS content, and widgets immediately, with no manual conversion, bulk migration, or theme changes required.

• Works With Any Image Adapter — WebP conversion uses PHP's GD or Imagick extensions directly, so it functions correctly even when Magento's own Image Processing Settings are left on the default GD adapter, which cannot produce WebP output on its own.
• Enable or Disable Without Losing Data — a single master switch reverts every upload and rendering path back to Magento's stock behavior instantly; existing WebP files are never deleted.
• Zero Core Code Changes — every integration uses Magento's standard plugin and preference architecture, making the extension safe to use alongside Magento upgrades and other extensions.

How It Works

Once the extension is enabled, go to Stores → Configuration → Magento Expert → WebP Images to set the WebP Quality and any Excluded Paths. No further setup is required — every supported upload location immediately accepts .webp files, and every existing image is converted automatically the first time the page that contains it is viewed. Conversion happens once per image; every subsequent request for the same image reuses the cached WebP file. If an image is later replaced with a new file of the same name, the cached WebP copy is regenerated automatically on the next view. 

Where WebP Images Appear

Product images are converted wherever Magento's standard product image block is used — category listing grids, the product detail page gallery, related products, up-sells, cross-sells, and product listing widgets such as New Products. Images embedded in CMS page content, static blocks, and Page Builder content are converted through the same content rendering pipeline, so promotional banners, homepage content, and Page Builder layouts all benefit automatically. Category images and images uploaded through the WYSIWYG editor are converted the same way. 

Browser Fallback

Every converted image is rewritten into the standard <picture> pattern: a WebP <source> is offered first, and the original JPG, PNG, or GIF file remains as the <img> fallback. Browsers select whichever format they support with no server-side user-agent detection or JavaScript involved. 

Media Gallery Integration

Magento's classic WYSIWYG image browser and the newer, database-indexed Media Gallery used by Page Builder's Insert File dialog both fully support WebP: existing WebP files are indexed via Magento's standard media-gallery:sync command, and thumbnail generation for WebP assets works without requiring the ImageMagick adapter.
