Overview

Payment Surcharge is an extension for Magento 2 that lets you add a configurable fee — a fixed amount or a percentage of the order subtotal — whenever a shopper selects a specific payment method at checkout, such as Cash on Delivery, Check / Money Order, or a bank transfer method. Every rule is created and managed entirely from the admin: pick a payment method, choose a fixed or percentage fee, set an optional minimum order subtotal, a maximum fee cap, and scope the rule to one website or all websites for multi-currency stores. The fee is calculated live as soon as a payment method is chosen and is shown as its own clearly labeled line item — never silently folded into shipping or tax — in the cart summary, the checkout order summary, the order confirmation page, the customer's My Account order view, admin order and invoice views, order confirmation and invoice emails, and credit memos. When an order is refunded, the surcharge can be refunded automatically on a full credit memo or adjusted manually for a partial refund, with an editable Surcharge Refund field right on the credit memo screen.

Features

  • Per Payment Method Rules — create as many surcharge rules as needed, each tied to a single payment method (Cash on Delivery, Check / Money Order, bank transfer, or any other active method), managed from a dedicated grid under Sales.
  • Fixed or Percentage Fees — charge a flat currency amount or a percentage of the order subtotal, with the percentage base configurable as subtotal only or subtotal plus shipping.
  • Minimum Order Subtotal — apply the surcharge only when the order subtotal reaches a configurable threshold, so small orders are unaffected.
  • Maximum Fee Cap — cap a percentage-based fee at a fixed maximum amount to avoid disproportionate charges on large orders.
  • Per-Website Scoping — scope a rule to a single website or to all websites, with fixed amounts entered in each website's own base currency for multi-currency installs.
  • Custom Fee Label — every rule has its own label (for example "Cash on Delivery Fee") that is shown to the customer everywhere the fee appears.
  • Optional Fee Taxation — assign a tax class to the fee so it is taxed consistently with the store's tax configuration, or leave it tax-exempt.
  • Live Checkout & Cart Totals — the fee recalculates immediately when the shopper changes payment method, with no page reload, and is shown as its own row in both the shopping cart summary and the checkout order summary.
  • Full Order Lifecycle Visibility — the same clearly labeled surcharge line item is carried through to the order confirmation page, admin order view, customer account order view, invoices, and order confirmation and invoice emails.
  • Credit Memo Refund Control — a store-wide setting decides whether the surcharge is refunded automatically on a full credit memo, and an editable Surcharge Refund field on the credit memo screen lets the admin decide the amount on a partial refund.
  • Guest and Registered Checkout — works identically for guest checkout and logged-in customer checkout, and for both single-page and multi-shipping-address checkout.
  • Admin Grid Management — a dedicated, sortable, filterable rules grid under Sales lets an admin add, edit, or remove surcharge rules in seconds, with an Active toggle per rule.
  • ACL-Protected Access — rule management can be restricted to specific admin roles using Magento's standard permissions system.
  • Zero Core Code Modifications — built entirely on Magento's sales total collector, layout XML, and plugin architecture. No class rewrites, no core file patches. Safe alongside Magento upgrades and other extensions.

How It Works

After enabling the extension, go to Sales → Payment Surcharge Rules and click Add New Rule. Choose the payment method the rule applies to, set the fee type and amount, optionally set a minimum order subtotal and maximum fee cap, and save. As soon as a shopper selects that payment method at checkout, the fee is calculated on the server and added to the order total, and the checkout page updates to show the new line item without a page reload. When the order is placed, the same fee amount and label carry through to the order record, so every later view of that order — in the admin, in the customer's account, in emails, and on invoices — shows a consistent, correctly labeled surcharge.

Storefront Display

The surcharge is never hidden inside another total. It appears as its own row, with the rule's configured label, in the shopping cart summary once a payment method has been selected, and in the checkout page's Order Summary panel during the Review & Payments step. Both totals update live: switching payment methods, changing the shipping address, or updating cart quantities all trigger an automatic recalculation so shoppers always see the correct order total before placing an order.

Order, Invoice & Credit Memo Handling

Once an order is placed, the surcharge amount and label are stored on the order and shown in the Order Totals section of the admin order view and the customer's My Account order view. Creating an invoice carries the full surcharge onto the first invoice for the order, and order confirmation and invoice email templates display the same line item automatically. On a full credit memo, the surcharge is refunded according to a global "Refund Surcharge on Full Credit Memo" setting; on a partial credit memo, the admin can enter any amount up to the remaining refundable balance in the dedicated Surcharge Refund field, with the same validation Magento uses for its own shipping refund field.

Use Cases

  • Cash on Delivery surcharges — offset the extra handling cost of COD orders without raising prices for customers who pay online.
  • Bank transfer or check payment fees — recover the administrative overhead of manually reconciling offline payment methods.
  • High-risk payment method premiums — apply a small percentage fee to payment methods associated with higher chargeback or fraud risk.
  • Multi-currency, multi-website stores — configure a fixed fee once per website in that website's own base currency, avoiding manual currency conversion.
  • Order-size-aware fees — use the minimum order subtotal and maximum fee cap together so small orders are unaffected and large orders are not overcharged.
