Overview

Mage2Expert Google Language Translation is an extension for Magento 2 that adds a free, Google-powered language switcher to your storefront header, footer, or any CMS page. Shoppers pick their language from a flag-and-name dropdown and the page is translated in place instantly, with no page reload, using Google's own free Website Translator widget. The dropdown is fully restyled to match your theme — colors, corner radius, and font size are all controlled from the admin with a real color picker — and Google's default "Powered by Google Translate" branding and toolbar banner can be hidden completely. Store owners selling into multiple regions can offer all 100+ of Google's supported languages or restrict the list to just the ones they need, show the switcher only on the page types that matter (home, product, category, CMS, contact, or checkout), and protect prices, SKUs, coupon codes, or a brand name from being machine-translated using simple CSS selector rules. Every setting is store-view scoped, so the extension fits naturally into multi-store and multi-language catalogs.

Features

  • Header & Footer Auto-Placement — enable the switcher once and choose whether it renders in the page header or the page footer, with no template edits required.
  • CMS Widget Placement — the same switcher is also a native Magento widget, so it can be dropped into any CMS page or CMS block from Content → Widgets, with its own optional language and layout overrides per instance.
  • Live, No-Reload Translation — selecting a language rewrites the page in place by driving Google's translation engine directly; there is no full page reload. If the header, footer, and a widget switcher all appear on the same page, they stay instantly in sync with each other.
  • Custom Styled Dropdown — replace Google's plain native widget with a flag-and-name dropdown styled using real color pickers for background, text, border, and hover colors, plus configurable corner radius and font size.
  • Hide Google Branding — suppress the default "Powered by Google Translate" attribution text and the translation toolbar banner that normally appears at the top of the page after a language is selected.
  • Choose Which Languages to Offer — offer all 100+ languages Google supports, or restrict the dropdown to a curated multi-select list that matches your actual customer base.
  • Per Page-Type Display Rules — show the switcher on every page, or enable it individually for the homepage, product pages, category pages, CMS pages, the Contact Us page, and checkout.
  • Translation Exclusions — list CSS selectors (one per line or comma separated) for elements that should never be translated, such as .price, #sku-code, or a store name; matching elements are automatically marked so Google leaves their text untouched.
  • Store-View Scoped Settings — every configuration field, including the offered language list, can be set independently per store view for multi-store and multi-language setups.
  • Enable / Disable without Losing Settings — a master switch under Stores → Configuration → Magento Expert → Google Translator turns the switcher off site-wide while keeping every configured value intact for whenever it's turned back on.
  • No API Key or Billing Required — built entirely on Google's free, client-side Website Translator widget. There is no Google Cloud account, API key, or per-character billing involved.
  • Zero Core Code Modifications — implemented with standard layout XML, an event observer, and a Magento widget definition. No class rewrites or core file changes, so it stays safe across Magento upgrades and alongside other extensions.

How It Works

After enabling the extension under Stores → Configuration → Magento Expert → Google Translator, choose whether the switcher appears in the header or footer, pick the storefront's original language, and optionally narrow down the list of languages to offer. Turning on the custom styled dropdown unlocks the color, corner radius, and font size controls under Design Settings, along with the option to hide Google's own branding. Display Settings then let you target specific page types instead of showing the switcher everywhere. Once saved, shoppers see the switcher immediately — choosing a language translates the current page in place without reloading it.

Placing the Switcher Anywhere with the Widget

Beyond the auto-inserted header or footer switcher, the same dropdown is available as a regular Magento widget. From Content → Widgets, add a Google Translator - Language Switcher widget instance, choose which pages it should appear on and which container or block it should render in, and optionally override the language list or layout for that single placement — useful for landing pages, static blocks, or any spot the global header/footer setting doesn't cover.

Use Cases

  • International storefronts — let visitors browse in their own language immediately, without maintaining separate translated store views for every market.
  • Regional and export businesses — offer a curated set of languages that match the specific countries a store actually ships to.
  • Multi-brand or multi-language catalogs — keep brand names, SKUs, and pricing untouched with selector-based exclusions while everything else translates normally.
  • Content-heavy CMS pages — add a dedicated language switcher to a landing page or static block via the widget, independent of the global header/footer placement.
  • Multi-store deployments — configure a different language list, position, or design per store view without any custom development.
