Back to topOverview
Back to topCategory Slider Widget transforms subcategory navigation into modern, clickable category cards that help shoppers discover products faster. Display child categories as a responsive grid or an optional horizontal slider, powered by category images or smart product-image fallbacks. Merchants can apply one of 18 preset card styles for instant results, then fine-tune design settings per store view—without custom theme development.
Instead of showing shoppers a plain list of subcategory links, Category Slider Widget renders an image-driven card layout that highlights what each category contains at a glance. On category pages, it can automatically display the active category’s child categories as a clean grid; for marketing content, you can place the same grid or a horizontal slider inside CMS pages and CMS blocks using a widget. Images can come from the category image you set in admin, or from product images within the category when a category image is missing—so the experience stays visual even in catalogs that aren’t perfectly maintained. You can also hand-pick which subcategories appear, drag-and-drop to set a custom order, and control columns per device (desktop/tablet/mobile) with global defaults and per-category overrides.
Features
- Replaces plain subcategory link lists with responsive, image-rich category cards
- Grid layout for category pages (automatically displays active child categories)
- Optional slider layout for compact, scrollable “Shop by Category” sections
- CMS Widget support: place a subcategory grid or slider inside CMS pages and CMS blocks
- 18 preset card styles (prebuilt themes) to instantly style cards, with full override control
- Smart image fallback options (use category image or auto-populate from product images)
- Per-category enable/disable controls
- Select exactly which subcategories to display using an admin category tree selector
- Custom ordering support (arrange selected subcategories to match merchandising priorities)
- Store view–scoped design settings (style each storefront differently)
- Desktop / tablet / mobile column controls with per-category overrides and global defaults
- Hyvä Themes & Luma compatible output (clean markup, no unnecessary frontend bloat)
How It Works
Configure global defaults in admin, optionally override per store view, then enable Category Slider Widget on any category to show child categories as cards. For CMS content, add the widget to any page/block and choose grid or slider mode. The module outputs lightweight markup and applies your selected image strategy (category image first, product fallback, or admin-selected), then styles the result using your selected preset or custom design settings.
Benefits
- Improves category engagement by giving shoppers visual pathways instead of text-only lists
- Speeds up discovery with image-driven navigation (even when category images are missing)
- Keeps layouts on-brand with presets plus detailed admin controls
- Reduces custom development time for “Shop by Category” experiences
Use Cases
- Homepage “Shop by Category” sections (grid or slider)
- Seasonal and promotional landing pages
- Brand hubs and curated collection pages
- Stores with deep category trees that need clearer navigation
