Back to topOverview
Back to topEvery store eventually stops selling something. Without a plan for it, the product page just sits there with a live "Add to Cart" button on a product you can no longer ship - or you delete it and turn a perfectly good, indexed URL into a 404. Either way, you lose the sale and the shopper leaves frustrated.
Discontinued Products gives you a clean way to handle it. Mark a product as discontinued from its own admin tab, and it can no longer be purchased anywhere on the store - the product page, category and search listings, even a single discontinued variant of a configurable product. Instead of a dead end, shoppers see a message you control, get pointed to a replacement product you pick, or are redirected straight to it automatically.
Features
- Per-product "Discontinued" toggle with its own tab on the product edit page - no separate screen to hunt for
- Store-wide, store-view-translatable message shown in place of "Add to Cart" on a discontinued product's page
- Optional automatic redirect to a replacement product by SKU - validated on save, so you can't point it at a SKU that doesn't exist or at the product itself
- Pick one or more replacement products per discontinued item; they're shown in a "Replacement Products" block right on the page
- Purchase is blocked everywhere, not just the product page - listings, a single discontinued variant of a configurable product, and direct cart/API calls all respect it
- A single master switch (with its own message override) to turn the whole feature on or off store-wide
You choose: message or redirect
Not every discontinued product needs the same treatment. Leave the redirect off and shoppers see your message plus whatever replacement products you've suggested - useful when there isn't a single obvious substitute. Or turn the redirect on and point it at one specific SKU: anyone who lands on the old product's URL - from a bookmark, an old email, a search result - is sent straight to the replacement instead of hitting a dead page.
Not just the "Add to Cart" button
A lot of "discontinued" implementations only hide the button on the product's own page and stop there. This one doesn't. A discontinued product can't be added to the cart from a category grid, from search results, or via a direct API/cart call either. For configurable products, the check is per-variant: discontinue a single color/size combination and only that combination gets blocked - the rest of the product keeps selling normally.
Suggest, don't just block
Blocking a purchase without offering an alternative is a lost sale. The Replacement Products block puts your hand-picked substitutes right where the shopper is already looking, so a discontinued item can still lead to a conversion instead of a bounce.
Plays well with Quick Order
If you also run our Quick Order module, install the free connector (brosolutions/quick-order-discontinued-connector) and the two work together out of the box: adding a discontinued SKU to a Quick Order list shows its replacement suggestions inline and blocks "Add to Cart" for the whole list until it's swapped out - no extra configuration.
Built for Hyvä Theme
The core module works on any theme. For stores running Hyvä Theme, the free companion module (brosolutions/discontinued-products-hyva) restyles the message and the Replacement Products block with Hyvä's own Tailwind components and positions them correctly on the page.
Open and extensible
This is an open-source module. Read a product's replacement suggestions from your own code via the included service class, build your own connector for another module using the same pattern as the Quick Order integration, or simply restyle the storefront templates to match your theme.
